Essential OilsEssential oils are the perfect way to add a festive aroma to your Flagstaff apartment home during the holiday season. They also have natural calming, mood-boosting, and even anti-viral properties that can be beneficial to your health and well-being. Here are some of the most important tips to keep in mind when choosing essential oils for your home this winter.

Best Essential Oils for Winter

Typically, the essential oils (EO) that have a high base or middle note are associated with winter scents. These include cinnamon, clove, frankincense, and ginger. Base-note EOs linger in the air longer than the top and middle note scents like lemon, orange, bergamot, and lavender. During the manufacturing of a perfume, the first sniff of a product will be the top and middle note scents, but the long-lasting, lingering smell of the perfume will be the base note flowers or plants.

Top note oils are light and breezy, making them perfect for setting a spring or summer mood. The best essential oils for winter are deeply fragrant and woodsy. These oils soothe and comfort, and may also inspire happy childhood memories or winter events. Here is a good list of essential oils to use leading up to the holidays and in the winter months after:

  • Ylang Ylang
  • Rose or Lavender
  • Cedarwood
  • Ginger
  • Myrrh
  • Cardamom
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove

Holiday-Scented Essential Oil Blends

There is no one way to blend a unique essential oil recipe. Experimenting with just a few drops in your diffuser of two or three of the following essential oils is all you need for an apartment full of holiday merriment.

  • Peppermint, Lemon, Eucalyptus
  • Cinnamon, Sweet Orange, Clove
  • Frankincense, Fir Needle, Cedar Wood
  • Ginger, Orange, Cinnamon
  • Wintergreen, Sweet Orange
  • Rosemary, Sage, Thyme
  • Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary

Diffusing essential oils during the holiday season can reduce stress, bring back happy winter memories, promote good health, and usher in the hopes of a Happy New Year.

Holiday decorWith the holiday season solidly upon us, it's time to get your home ready. But how do you create an environment that makes it easy for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves? Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to create a welcoming atmosphere for your friends and loved ones during this special time of year. Here's a quick list to help you get started.

Start With a Deep Clean

Sure, you regularly clean your home, but when's the last time you really made it sparkle with a deep cleaning? Take out the scrub brushes, heavy-duty cleaners, and elbow grease to bring out the very best your home has to offer.

Consider a Few Upgrades

Are some of your appliances starting to age? What about furniture that is getting past its prime? One of the best holiday presents you can give yourself is an upgrade to your home that makes it more enjoyable for everyone well past the holiday season.

Make Your Home Smell Like Holiday Spirit

Though it's tempting to focus on just the visual aspects of your home's appearance during the holiday season, don't forget the other senses! Potpourri, scented candles, wax burners, incense: All these materials add a warm, welcoming scent to your home's atmosphere.

Rock the Tunes

No matter which type of music you like, having a playlist or CDs of appropriate holiday music in a style that really moves you is a great way to add to the atmosphere. Just remember to enhance, not overwhelm, by keeping the volume reasonable for your guests and neighbors.

By taking a little time to make your Flagstaff home look fabulous and have a wonderful, embracing atmosphere for your loved ones and friends, you can help ensure that everyone has a marvelous time this holiday season. If you or someone you know are considering a move as part of your New Year's resolutions, contact us to schedule a tour of our apartments in Flagstaff today.

Holiday decorThis holiday season, get to know your Flagstaff neighbors a little better by learning about their traditions. You'll probably find that there are many unique celebrations for a wide range of holidays throughout the year. Here, we provide you with a few of the most interesting holiday traditions from around the world.

Holiday Traditions From Around the World

1. Christmas in Finland

We're probably familiar with many Christmas traditions in the United States, but in Finland, this holiday doesn't involve Santa coming down a chimney. Instead, families light candles and place them by their loved ones' graves to honor them. The candles in the snow make the evenings glow as families remind themselves that their loved ones will live again.

2. Pancake Week in Russia

In Russian, the Slavic holiday Maslenitsa loosely translates to crepe or pancake week. It's celebrated in February or March, and for one week, Russians eat blinis. Blinis are thin crepe-like pancakes, with a round shape to represent the sun, and are topped with sweets and other savory foods. At the end of the week, a straw effigy is burned, symbolizing the end of winter.

3. Diwali in India

This is a holiday of lights. For five days during October or November, people in India and across the world celebrate Diwali, which is a holiday commemorating good over evil, thus, light over darkness. Lights and lamps of all kinds are used to illuminate homes and streets.

4. Qingming Festival in China

Qingming is a festival in China that honors ancestors. It's a day set aside to clean the tombs of ancestors, usually somewhere between April 4 and 6. But it's also a day of flying elaborate kites and lighting up colored lanterns.

5. Sinterklaas's Birthday in Holland

In Holland, on December 5, the eve of Saint Nicholas, children await Sinterklaas, who comes all the way from Spain to deliver presents. He rides into town on a white horse and only gives gifts to good kids while the "bad" kids are said to be sent to Spain for a year to learn manners.

And there you have it: five beautiful holiday traditions from around the world. At our apartments in Flagstaff, we welcome you and your holiday traditions because we know that is what truly makes a community. Contact us today for a tour.
